Jenny Davis & Jovino Santos Neto RETURN to Cellar Cat!
Sunday, September 15th Jenny Davis,
Jovino Santos Neto & Phil Sparks swing Cellar Cat from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Composer, bandleader and critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jenny Davis has shifted the focus of her art to reflect her life as an advocate for change. This aspect of her life’s work cuts deep on, Rearranged (the Yeoman Warders Project), her fourth album as a leader. It is an album in which the art of composition takes center stage, as all but three works featured here have been crafted by Davis.
Inspired by a deep love of jazz, Davis has achieved a “clarity of depth and authority in her writing” (JAZZ TIMES) in nearly 20 years as a musician, recording artist and improvisor.A passionate human rights advocate, she has set to music her original scores inspired by her devotion to promote acceptance of diversity. Pushing the creative edge, her newest album, Rearranged, released under Three Penny Records, features an all-star cast, including multi-Grammy nominated Brazilian pianist, Jovino Santos Neto, award-winning flugelhornist, (mentored by Art Farmer) Dmitri Matheny, NYC’s Sirius String Quartetand the Yeoman Warders Sax Quartet.
Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, a master pianist, composer and arranger, is among the top Brazilian musicians working today. Currently based in Seattle, Washington, he has throughout his career been closely affiliated with the Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal. He was an integral part of Pascoal's group from 1977 to1992, where he fine-tuned his artistry, performing around the world and co-producing several legendary records.
Jovino’s personal style is a creative blend of energetic grooves, deep harmonies, telepathic improvisation, lyrical melodies and great ensemble playing, always inspired and informed by the colorful richness of Brazilian music. His compositions include samba, choro, baião, xote, forró, marcha and many more styles, rooted in centuries-old musical tradition while pointing to new and adventurous harmonic languages.

Native Seattlite, pianist, composer, author, multiple award-winner Bill Anschel comes to Cellar Cat in creative collaborative duet with marvelous Gail Pettis. Nimble-fingered Bill is a sought-out Puget Sound area sideman, known for his intuitive attention to detail, musicality and finesse. Admired as an egalitarian band leader and masterful composer - his name well-known to anyone listening to Jazz24 or KNKX, his fluid and memborable original compositions in constant radio and online rotation - Bill is a large part of making Seattle's growing jazz scene THE scene in west coast jazz.
Gail Pettis is a remarkably original song stylist who does not bring to mind Billie or Ella or Sarah or any other vocalist, past or present. In jazz, she found an ideal outlet for expressing herself as an individual. “It feels like I’ve been looking for this all my life,” she explains. “Jazz invites you to be yourself, and that really appeals to me. You’re not required to sound like anyone else nor do you ever have to sing a song the same way twice. Jazz only asks that you live in the moment. That is tremendously freeing.” Seattle’s Earshot Jazz magazine named Gail “2007 Northwest Vocalist of the Year,” and her debut CD, May I Come In?, issued that year by Origin/OA2 Records, received a warm reception by XM Satellite Radio and Music Choice Television, stations across the United States and also in Germany and Portugal.

Saturday, September 28th JONAS MYERS RETURNS to Cellar Cat after his many adventures.
7 - 10 p.m. no cover - $20 per person minimum - bring cash to tip the piano man!
Jonas Myers is a musician, writer, teacher, bicycle wanderer, and proud lifelong Cascadian. Growing up, he played bass and sang in a family band. Later, as a pianist in Seattle's Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble, he performed at Lincoln Center in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. He attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, where he majored in English with a focus on creative writing and minored in mathematics.
In his twenties, Jonas gained recognition as a jazz pianist, composer and bandleader on the Seattle scene. In 2018, he spent five months wandering the West Coast on his bicycle. These travels, fueled by the generosity of countless strangers, were to have a profound influence on his music and writing. He returned to Seattle in 2019 and recorded an album of original songs, featuring a nine-piece ensemble, titled “Driving Home.” In 2021, he created a livestream variety show on YouTube called “North City Almanac,” featuring artists from around the Pacific Northwest. That same year, he moved to Corvallis, Oregon, for an MFA program in fiction at OSU, from which he graduated in 2023. He now lives in Port Townsend, WA, where he performs and teaches music.
